‘Spirit’ shows for 200 years
More than one year ago, volunteers in the town of Portland began planning a major celebration – the town’s 200th birthday.
This past weekend, the efforts of their labor paid off with a community event that left many proud. Included in the celebration was a lighting of the refurbished Brocton arch, historical displays, a strongman contest, a grand parade, plenty of food and drink and a performance by Sean Patrick McGraw.
“I want to thank everyone for your community spirit,” said state Sen. Catharine Young after the parade on Sunday. “I especially want to thank the countless volunteers the committee people who worked so hard to put this entire year’s festivity together. I know that you really rolled up your sleeves and worked very hard.”
The planning paid off. It was a well-organized weekend.
