Dusty Barrett coming to Gerry Rodeo

One of the top performers in rodeo, Dusty Barrett, will be bringing his Roman Riding ponies, along with his comedy and his skill as a barrelman, to the Gerry Volunteer Fire Departments’s 69th annual PRCA rodeo from July 31 to August 3. His act will also feature Dusti Stockton, the youngest trick rider in rodeo today.

Barrett’s career in rodeo began as a young boy when he assisted his grandfather, the famous Dick Barrett, with his Model T car act. His mother and aunt were barrel racers. Barrett then went on to perform in bull riding and the saddle and bareback bronc events, winning the First Frontier Saddle Bronc Championship in 1998.

He found that he had a special gift for training horses, and his Roman Riding act with his ponies grew out of that skill, as he rides two ponies at a time around the arena, performing various tricks. Recently young Stockton has joined his act and he says the fans will be amazed at her riding skills. In 2012 they were the featured act at the First Frontier Circuit Finals in Harrisburg, Pa.

This summer, Barrett will be performing across the country with stops in Idaho, Utah, and Montana, before heading back East. When he is not on the road, he and his wife Jennifer operate an 18-acre horse training facility in Saratoga Springs.

The Gerry Rodeo attracts more than 125 professional cowboys and cowgirls from across the country to compete for $35,000 in prize money in the traditional rodeo events: saddle and bareback bronc riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, barrel racing, and bull riding. It is the longest consecutively running pro rodeo east of the Mississippi, with all proceeds benefiting the Gerry Volunteer Fire Department. The stock contractor is Painted Pony Rodeo headquartered in Lake Luzerne, N.Y.

The five-performance event has nightly competition at 8:00 beginning on Wednesday, July 31, and running through Saturday, August 3, with an afternoon matinee at 2:00 on Saturday. The famous beef barbecue dinners are served nightly starting at 5:00, while the midway features more than 20 vendors offering everything from cotton candy to Western wear.
