Heritage Green welcomes mission team from Ohio

GREENHURST Recently, Heritage Green Rehab & Skilled Nursing welcomed the Youth Mission Team from the United Church of Huntington, Ohio. Sponsored by the church, the United Church of Huntington Youth Mission Team spent a week around the Chautauqua County area doing mission work in the community.

The Mission Team consisted of 15 youths and three adults. Most of the youths ranged from sixth through 12th grade. Joel and Alie Bucklin, leaders of the group, explained, “Our Church plans a youth mission trip every year. Through an affiliation with the Busti Church of God, we were able to contact David Smeltzer, executive director for Heritage, to inquire about volunteer opportunities at Heritage Ministries.” Joel adds, “We feel it is important for us as an organization and our youth in particular, to serve others and see how they live. We were honored to be able to volunteer our time and do God’s work for the betterment of others.”

In addition to Heritage Green, the Mission Team also volunteered their time at Bergquist Memorial Assisted Living (Gerry), Heritage Village Rehab & Skilled Nursing (Gerry), St. Susan’s Soup Kitchen (Jamestown), and some local churches.

Heritage Green Rehab & Skilled Nursing, in particular has an outdoor sensory garden called Tranquility Garden that was in need of some extra tender, loving care. The Huntington Mission Team worked to remove weeds and dead plants in preparation for some beautifying mulch. The change was immediately noticed by the facilities residents.

Norine Cramer, corporate director of activities for Heritage Ministries, remarked “We were extremely honored to host the Youth Mission Team from the United Church of Huntington. Led by Joel and Alie Bucklin, I was very impressed with the servant leadership of these young men and women. We are very grateful for their hard work and unselfish volunteerism. Volunteers are an essential aspect to the high level of quality of care we provide to countless seniors at Heritage Ministries.”

Maggie Richardson, administrative assistant also adds, “When I saw the Missions Team arrive, it really made my heart sing. Each summer, I try to spend my spare time in Tranquility Garden to make it look nice for our residents. To have the Missions Team arrive and help us, felt like a personal gift from God. Thank you!”
