‘Chautauqua People’ to debut on Access Channel 5
Charles L. Kelsey, Executive Director of Access Channel 5, announced that longtime Chautauquan Warren L. Hickman will be the first person featured on the new Access TV Channel 5 program called “Chautauqua People,” which debuts this month. Prof. Hickman, 92, has led a distinguished career that includes three years spent in World War II as a member of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower’s European staff. Prof. Hickman is celebrating his 85th year attending the Chautauqua Institution’s summer season.
“Chautauqua People” will feature special guests who have interesting connections to Chautauqua Institution such as Dr. Hickman, who first attended the Chautauqua Institution in 1926 when he was 5. Dr Hickman began coming to the Institution annually in 1931, and over the years participated in virtually all of its activities. In 1946, he even met his wife-to-be at Chautauqua. He later served as a trustee and was a frequent lecturer at the Institution.
A believer in lifelong education, Prof. Hickman received his bachelor’s degree from Colgate University, a master’s in International Relations from Columbia University, and a doctorate from the Graduate Institute of International Studies of the University of Geneva (Switzerland). He retired as a professor of political science from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1987 after an academic career that lasted almost 40 years, which included service as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences of Ithaca College, and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty of Eisenhower College.
This week’s interviewer, Ira Cooperman, is a Special Studies instructor at Chautauqua whose focus is intelligence activities and military history. John Viehe will produce “Chautauqua People.”
The program will air on Access Channel 5 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. each day beginning on July 27 with the last airing on Aug. 2.
