James R. Cassidy
James Rowley “Jim” Cassidy passed away July 23, 2013 with his family by his side.
A longtime resident of the Dunkirk-Fredonia area, Jim will be remembered most for his incredible love of family as well as community. Born in Washington, DC January 20, 1931, the son of George and Alice (Flanagan) Cassidy. Jim was an alumnus of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, the University of Maryland and Utica College of Syracuse University. In his early years he was a proud member of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad.
Jim loved his country and was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having served in active combat during the Korean Conflict. He moved to the area in 1957, and worked at Dunkirk Radiator for 26 years. Jim was married to Rae (nee) Coogan in 1963 and they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 27th. Following his tenure at Dunkirk Radiator, Jim worked as the Village of Fredonia’s Building Inspector and Code Enforcement Officer until 1998 and continued in a consulting role until 2002.
An active member of the Dunkirk-Fredonia community, Jim served two terms on the Fredonia Central School Board of Education and as treasurer of the Chautauqua Area Girl Scout Council. He also served on the board of the Chautauqua County YMCA and was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, the Dunkirk Rotary Club, Dunkirk Chamber of Commerce, Fredonia American Legion Post 59, Shorewood Country Club, and the Dunkirk Club. He was a charter member of the Dunkirk Traffic and Transportation Club and a member of the Dunkirk Junior Chamber of Commerce, with which he held numerous positions. Jim and Rae also ran the Fredonia High School Ski Club for several years. Always on the go, Jim enjoyed sailing, skiing, golf, travel and more and instilled the love of the outdoors in all of his children.
Jim traveled extensively during his retirement, including trips abroad and countless trips around the country to spend time with family.
He is survived by his wife Rae, and eight children: Anne “Garret” Negri (Craig), John “Randy” Cassidy (Karen), Robin Menard (Glenn), Margaret Cassidy, Jennifer Cassidy, Amy Lehman (Zachary), James Cassidy (Holly) and Joseph Cassidy (Elizabeth). He was also the very proud grandfather of 17 grand- children: Nicholas, Christa, Andrew, Brendan, Lindsey, Kevin, Anna, Daniel, Mitchell, Griffin, Avery, Connery, Clare, Emma, Colin, Megan and Seamus. He is also survived by his brother John J. Cassidy (Cindy), of Potomac, Maryland, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call today from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Larson-Timko Funeral Home, 20 Central Avenue, Fredonia, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church, 145 East Main Street, Fredonia, NY Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. (Please assemble at church). Burial will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dunkirk, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the American Legion Post 59 of Fredonia.
