Ashville man charged after found with weapon at fair

A 51-year-old Ashville resident is in the Chautauqua County Jail after being in possession of a weapon at the fairgrounds in Dunkirk.

Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Deputies report Henry L. Smith was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon after he was observed at the County Fair around 8:40 p.m. Friday. Deputies were aware of an active warrant for Smith out of North Harmony Court.

After he was taken into custody, he was found to be in possession of a switchblade. Due to the fact he had been convicted of a prior crime, the discovery led to a felony charge.

He was later arraigned on the original warrant in North Harmony Town Court and sent to jail without bail.

State Police arrest Gowanda men during Operation Strike Force

BUFFALO – New York State Police working Operation Strike Force in the city of Buffalo arrested Bradley Gabel, 27, and Nicholas Castellano, 24, both of Gowanda on July 25. Both men were charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and possession of prescription drugs outside their container following a traffic stop.

Gabel was operating a vehicle which approached a traffic road check being conducted on Fillmore Avenue in the city of Buffalo. The troopers observed the front seat passenger of the vehicle, Castellano, not wearing his seatbelt and the car was stopped. An investigation revealed that both Gabel and Castellano were in possession of suboxone, a controlled substance, outside its container and that Gabel had was wanted by the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Department for a probation violation.

Gabel and Castellano were processed and held at the City of Buffalo Holding Center pending arraignment

SILVER CREEK – Dale W. Miller Jr., 31, of Adams Street was charged with driving while intoxicated and unlicensed operation on July 27. At 10:35 a.m. deputies responded to an erratic vehicle complaint on Central Avenue. Deputies were able to locate this vehicle on Adams Street and found Miller to be the operator. Miller was found to be intoxicated during the traffic stop. He was arraigned in Silver Creek Village Court and sent to the Chautauqua County Jail on bail.

PORTLAND – James L. Moreland, 54, of Dunkirk was charged with second-degree arson on July 27. At 1:20 p.m. deputies observed Moreland operating a vehicle on Route 20 in the town of Portland and was known to have an active arrest warrant. Deputies conducted a traffic stop where Moreland was taken into custody. He was sent to the Chautauqua County Jail without bail.
