Dunkirk 8-Under competes at Lancer Classic

Dunkirk Little League sent an 8-under baseball team to compete in the Lancer Classic in Lewiston from July 26 through July 28. The 16-team tournament featured teams from New York, Pennsylvania and Ontario, Canada, and included three games to determine seeding, which were followed by four separate single-elimination tournaments.

Dunkirk began the tournament with a 7-3 loss to eventual Diamond Bracket champs, the Erie Outlaws. Dunkirk was led at the plate by Brady Corbett, Jack Lanski and Adam Fred (double, RBI), who all had two hits.

In its second game, Dunkirk fell to eventual tournament runner-up, Lou Gehrig Blue, 12-5. Alex Ahlstrom had a pair of hits in the loss for Dunkirk while also making several plays on defense. Javier DeJesus and Nathan Pakulski also contributed offensively while Corbett made a defensive stop to end a Lou Gehrig rally.

Dunkirk fell in its third game, 19-6, to North Tonawanda, the eventual Gold Bracket champion. Fred had three hits in the loss while Lanski and Ahlstrom each had two hits. Reggie Brent, Bryson Travis and Corbett also had a hit in the loss.

In the single-elimination tournaments, Dunkirk faced the Lockport Spartans in a Silver Bracket matchup. The local boys built a 5-0 lead and eventually won the game 7-3, behind the hitting of Ahlstrom, DeJesus, Travis and Fred, who all had two hits. Champ Texidor and Jordan Thompson also contributed key hits in Dunkirk’s win.

In the Silver Bracket championship game, Dunkirk fell to the Lakeview Lightning, 20-5. In the loss, Dunkirk collected 11 hits, with Ahlstrom, DeJesus, Lanski and Pakulski all collecting two each. Brent chipped in a diving catch in right field to end a Lakeview rally.
