Five-Week Balance Clinic for area seniors at Brooks
Officials at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk are accepting registrations for a new five-week version of a popular program for seniors focusing on wellness and ways to enhance balance to minimize injuries and the risk of falls. Organizers Linda Courtney, Director of Physical Therapy and Tammy Kiszak, Physical Therapist, say the balance clinic will begin on Tuesday, Aug. 6 at noon in the Physical Therapy Department at the hospital, 529 Central Ave. The clinic, “Staying Balanced Throughout Your Life,” will be held twice weekly on Tuesday and Thursday for five consecutive weeks at $11 per session. Enrollment is limited.
Each session will be held for one hour and does not require a doctor’s referral. According to the organizers, the program is open to senior citizens interested in learning strategies for staying balanced, improving control of posture and reducing the risk of falls. The curriculum includes take home materials and a follow-up phone call to check on participants’ progress.
Those interested in enrolling in the program must be able to walk with or without an assistive device independently and be able to follow course instructions. Participants are asked to wear sneakers and workout apparel. For those seniors who are not appropriate for the Balance Clinic, there is always the option of obtaining a referral from their physician and being seen as a traditional outpatient.
To register, call the Physical Therapy Department at 716-363-3092. Brooks Memorial Hospital is an affiliate of Lake Erie Regional Health System of New York (LERHSNY).
