Dorothy R. Ostrye
Dorothy R. Ostrye, 89, passed away July 18, 2013 in Tulsa, OK.
Dorothy was born on July 14, 1924 in Dunkirk, NY, the daughter of Ignatius and Mary Ryby.
A graduate of Dunkirk High School, she married James Herbert “Bud” Ostrye in 1949 and settled on Albany Avenue in Dunkirk where they raised their three sons. She was an active parishioner of St. Mary’s Church and later Holy Trinity Church.
Dorothy was a proud homemaker and was especially talented in sewing and cooking. She and her husband later enjoyed camping and traveled widely for many years in their camper. They also enjoyed square dancing and were able to combine their travels with their love of dancing wherever they went.
In 1985, she and her husband Bud moved to Mesa, Arizona where they enjoyed the sunshine and became active communicants of St. Bridget Church. In 2011, Dorothy moved to Tulsa to be closer to her family.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Bud; a sister, Rose Jesse and a brother John Ryby. She is survived by two sisters, Joan Beatman of Venice, Florida and Sister Mary Gracille of Buffalo, NY. She leaves behind her three sons, Thomas of Tulsa, OK, James and his wife Mary of Severna Park, MD and Daniel and his wife Hannah of Yarmouth, ME; seven grandchildren, Bethany, Nathan, Matthew, Patrick, Thomas, Katherine and Robert; and one great-grandchild, Aspen. Besides her immediate family, she leaves behind Shannon Empson, who provided friendship and comfort to Dorothy in her later years.
A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, at Holy Trinity Church in Dunkirk. Internment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
