Twenty years ago – 1993
A longtime local grocery store operator and his wife hope to open a new, full-service supermarket on Central Avenue in Dunkirk in several weeks. Gary Damico and his wife Patricia are in the process of purchasing the former Dunkirk Market at 411 Central Ave. and plan to extensively renovate the building before opening for business this fall. The new store will be called Damico’s P&G Foods, Your Hometown Market, with emphasis on fresh meat and produce and locally-made products.
Thirty years ago – 1983
A citation recognizing his involvement in the Dunkirk Historical Society and his continued community-related efforts has been presented to Louis S. VanWey of Dunkirk on behalf of President Ronald Reagan. Contained within a gold gilt frame, the message was presented by Robert J. Harris of Dunkirk, who succeeded Mr. VanWey as historical society president. The surprise ceremony was witnessed by several members of the society founded by Mr. VanWey with assistance from members of the community.
Forty years ago – 1973
Reports were confirmed today that the Pizza Hut Corporation will open its newest location on Route 60 in Fredonia, directly opposite McDonald’s Restaurant. Water rates have already been approved by the village.
Fifty years ago – 1963
The Brocton Jaycees, dressed in old-fashioned women’s clothing, beat the T-shirt clad Downtown Boys in the “Donkey Baseball” game in Brocton. Downtowner Peter Spinuzza was the only one thrown off his burro.
