Longtime Dunkirk resident Josephine (Tremante) Valone marked her 100th birthday recently.

Nearly 100 friends and family from around the country gathered at her great-niece Tracy Glashauser’s home in Derby for a barbecue to celebrate the occasion.

Mrs. Valone and her late husband Russell owned and operated Valone’s Meat Market, a landmark at 53 E. Third Street in Dunkirk, for over 60 years. Mr. Valone retired in 1972.

Mr. and Mrs. Valone were married in 1932 and were married for about 70 years. They had two sons: George who is deceased and Vincent who lives with his wife Mary Ann in Fredonia. There are three grandchildren: Russell, Richard and Valerie.

Nephew Russ Tremonte who now lives in Newland, N.C., and provided the information about the celebration to the OBSERVER was a Dunkirk resident. He worked at Valone’s and remembers that although it was a small establishment it was very busy.

He remembered, “At one time, there were six butchers working there.”

In North Carolina, he misses the Italian sausage as well as the hot dogs available in Western New York. When he travels to the area, he returns home with a supply.

Son Russell said his mom was pleased with the celebration. He notes that his mother is a very religious woman of the Baptist faith and still quite independent.

Mrs. Valone led the group assembled at the party in her honor in prayer.

Glashauer said, “”Aunt Jo is beautiful in every way.”
