Lighthouse event a bright spot

Readers who have been following the weekly “Yesterdays and Todays” column by Mary Burns Deas on our Lifestyles page weekly know what big event is coming to Dunkirk’s Lighthouse this weekend.

On Saturday and Sunday, the “Battle of Lighthouse Point Civil War Living History Camp and Reenactment will be hosted by the Dunkirk Historical Lighthouse and Veterans Park Museum. Events for the two-day event include: raising the flag, a safety inspection, a fife and drum concert, a church service as well as a weapons demonstration and battle scenario.

“These reenactors are dedicated to preserving our nation’s history and commemorating the sacrifices of the men and women made during the Civil War,” Deas wrote. “The group is comprised of people from throughout the eastern United States with most having ancestral roots to the war.”

Also noted by numerous Lighthouse volunteers is the traffic the historic structure receives. Nine out of 10 visitors are tourists with nearly 20,000 people visiting each year.

This weekend, local residents have an opportunity to see what so many from outside the area treasure.
