Twenty years ago – 1993
Dr. Estelle M. Crino of Silver Creek, principal of Gowanda Elementary School, is retiring from an educational career spanning more than 42 years in the field of teaching and administration. She began teaching in 1950 as an Allegany Franciscan Sister, teaching in a converted cigar factory in a non-segregated area in Ybor City, Tampa, Fla. Dr. Crino completed a six-year teaching position in the Silver Creek schools and in 1979, was the first woman administrator hired to a principalship at Gowanda Central School.
Thirty years ago – 1983
No information has been given from the Buffalo Medical Center concerning the foot that was found off of the Dunkirk Pier on July 25. Chautauqua County Coroner Warren Riles said the medical center is examining the foot to determine, among other things, how old the foot is and how long it was in the water. Mr. Riles said he expects results from the medical center soon.
Forty years ago – 1973
The tedious job of well drilling turned to tragedy early this morning when the gas well on the George Noble farm on North Road in Lamberton just west of Fredonia hit pay dirt – and exploded into flames seconds later. Firemen from 10 area companies battled the blaze for five hours before it was brought under control. Of the four night crewmen, one man from Chester, Ontario was taken to Brooks Hospital and treated for first- and second-degree burns.
Fifty years ago – 1963
The Dunkirk Common Council has given the go-ahead to the city Recreation Commission to set up a boat docking area at Point Gratiot.
