Twenty years ago – 1993

A front page photo shows the home of Barney Kuzara, 106 Moffat St., Dunkirk covered with banners, streamers, balloons and congratulatory signs in anticipation of the return of the team he managed to the New York State Little League Softball Senior League championships. Two of Mr. Kuzara’s daughters, Tonia and Heather, are members of the team.

Thirty years ago – 1983

Robin Dunbar, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dunbar, 20 Taft Place, Dunkirk is the August Calendar Girl. A student in the beauty culture course at BOCES Fredonia, she is a senior at Dunkirk High School. Robin works part-time in the dietary department at Brooks Hospital. She enjoys ice skating, bicycling and swimming.

Forty years ago – 1973

Betsy Reed and Joan Kuzdale won the “Criers” tournament – one of several weekly events planned by the Shorewood Women’s Golf Association.

Fifty years ago – 1963

Dunkirk Police and FBI agents at 5:15 this morning surprised and captured Cecil Audrey Thompson, 46, a convicted murderer who escaped June 12 from a Georgia penitentiary. He was taken into custody by Police Chief Richard M. Kinn while sleeping in a Columbus Street home. The Dunkirk family, however, was not implicated in the criminals escape and their names are not being disclosed.
