FORESTVILLE – A kind gesture can make a huge difference in someone’s life.
Vicki Case was paralyzed in an accident 31 years ago at the age of 18. “But that never stopped me,” she said in a recent interview.
She explained that she has suffered from pancreatitis and vertigo which has not allowed her to leave home in eight years. Because Case can only be transported by an ambulance, she has missed out on many of her daughter’s activities.
He daughter, Lindsey Falco, has been involved in 4-H, horseback riding and attended BOCES for nursing. Falco said neither her mother, or her father who lives out-of-state, could attend class night or her BOCES graduation and she was facing the same for her high school graduation.
Her friend, Jessica Nichols, didn’t want Case to miss out on the event and got the ball rolling for Case to be picked up by the Forestville Fire Department ambulance and taken to the graduation ceremony.
Case was able to be taken to the ceremony and, on a stretcher, watched her daughter graduate from the side of the auditorium.
“Lindsey kept looking over at me. Many parents, friends and teachers came over to tell me what a great girl she is,” Case remembered. “It was a sunny day and they let me stay to watch them release balloons afterward.”
“It meant a lot to me to have my mom there,” Falco said. “I don’t have a large family to begin with – it is basically my mom, my dad and me – and since my dad moved, I wasn’t going to have any of my parents at graduation.”
Since graduation, Falco has been employed with WCA Home, where she interned while attending BOCES. She said her career path has been inspired by her mom.
“My mom inspired me to go to BOCES for nursing and get my CNA. I interned at WCA Home and they hired me after graduation. Living with my mom, I have seen the best and the worst aides. I want to be one of the best,” she said.
Case and Falco wanted to thank Nichols and the Forestville Fire Department for making the special day possible, and especially members Kyle Barthel, Melissa Hirschfield and Joey Kohler. They also thanked Forestville Central School and Superintendent Charles Leichner for allowing them to have the same experience other families have.
“They helped make this dream possible,” Family friend Lisa Pasinski added.
Falco also wanted to thank her teachers Mrs. Weise and Mrs. Huyck for their support while she attended school.
