Gowanda school board discusses tax levy

GOWANDA – Taxpayers who live in the Gowanda Central School district may see a potential drop in tax rates which were discussed.

At a recent meeting, the Gowanda Board of Education discussed the proposed tax rates which were approved in May as part of the tax levy in the 2013-2014 budget.

Under the current levy tax rates would be: $21.31 in the town of Dayton, $23.72 in the town of Perrysburg, $22.15 for the town of Persia, $17.63 in the town of Hanover, $20.17 in the town of Collins and $12.51 in the of North Collins. The town of Perrysburg increased over $2 because of the equalization rate. All other towns increased between $0.45 to $0.56 except North Collins which increased by $0.27.

According to Business Executive Joelle Woodward, Erie County sales tax helps the tax rates in Collins and North Collins. The town of Persia was the only town to see a decrease in the tax rate – a decrease of one cent.

The tax levy passed as part of the budget was a 2.55 percent increase over last year’s levy. Board member Mark Nephew suggested decreasing the levy by just under $24,000, which would lower the tax levy increase by half a percent to 2.5 percent. By doing so, the tax rates would decrease in each of the towns.

Since the school has fund balance left over from the previous school year, the district is able to discuss the option of lowering the levy. With the lower levy, the proposed tax rates would be $21.21 for Dayton, $23.61 for Perrysburg, $22.06 for Persia, $17.55 for Hanover, $27.05 for Collins and $12.44 for North Collins.

The board will vote on the proposed tax rates at its next meeting today at 7 p.m. The board also approved Dawn Campbell as a substitute teacher, Karie Bugenhagen as a full-time probationary position in music and Jeffery Rozler as substitute cleaner and substitute custodian.

The board accepted with regret the resignation of middle school instrumental music teacher Debra Davis effective Aug. 31.
