Twenty years ago – 1993

A column by OBSERVER reported Bill Dill relates how custom doors built by Steve Dean’s Chautauqua Woods business are fast becoming status symbols of the rich and famous. Several well-known sports figures are also purchasing the doors which sell for anywhere from $600 to $3000. Customers are willing to pay for quality. Unlike the mass produced plywood doors, Chautauqua Wood doors are all hand crafted; some contain 100 different parts. An average of 15 man hours is required to assemble each door.

Thirty years ago – 1983

Ruth Conti says most of her closest friends are male which, for her, is appropriate. She is the only female in an otherwise all-male Interstate Soccer League and a member of the defending champion Freshmart team of Fredonia. Ruth has been competing with males for most of her 24 years. Her first organized competition against males was as the only female member of the Fredonia High School cross country team. She also has 19 years of training in ballet and dance.

Forty years ago – 1973

The final concert of the summer music clinic at Fredonia State University College will feature soloist Carol Leone, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Leone of Dunkirk.

Fifty years ago – 1963

Lawrence Rinaldo, 16, of 8 South St., Lily Dale, won third place in the large mouth bass division of the Louis A. Wehle fishing contest. He caught a 7-pound, 8-ounce black bass in Cassadaga Lake.
