County Republican Party honors Lou Habig

LAKEWOOD – At the annual dinner at the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club held recently, the Chautauqua County Republican Committee honored Lou Habig with the Jess Present Memorial Award for his “dedication and commitment to the values and principles of the Republican Party.”

Habig spent his working years as a research chemist, a U.S. Navy officer, a part-time instructor at the University at Buffalo Dental School and had a private general dental practice in Westfield from 1968 to 2005.

His community service is extensive. He was a Westfield volunteer fireman and belongs to the Westfield Firemen’s Exempt organization and was member and chairman of the Westfield Board of Public Utilities.

Habig was chairman of Friends of Rockefeller Arts Center and on their Steering Committee. He served as secretary of the Westfield Community Kitchen and participated in Green Wing Day, sponsored by Ducks Unlimited.

Habig was a volunteer for the Family Health Medical Services Golf Tournament and a volunteer for the Westfield Memorial Hospital Golf Tournament for which he received an award for his spirit of volunteerism.

Habig is past member and president of the Westfield-Mayville Rotary Club. He serves every year on the Pumpkin Patrol and is a member of the Salvation Army Board.

Habig has been a member of the Westfield Republican Committee since 1988, serving as chairman from 2005 to 2012. He and his committee have raised more than $8,000 for candidates to cover campaign expenses.

The committee has raised thousands of dollars for the following organizations: Westfield Memorial Hosp-ital; McClurg Museum; Patterson Library; Westfield Women’s Organization and two fundraisers for Westfield Main Street Christmas Decorations.

Habig has been and continues to be an outstanding example of leadership and volunteerism, and richly deserves having received the Jess Present Memorial Award.
