Families and college students packed Barker Common in the village of Fredonia on Saturday for the 45th annual Farm Festival. Several children gathered at the New York Masonic Safety ID Program tent to take part in the organization’s special event and kid’s tractor pull.
“We make a little ID card for parents and all the info also goes onto a disc,” Carl Kerr of the Masons said. The child’s fingerprints are also recorded onto the disc so that in the event the child goes missing, this information can be helpful to police.
Kerr said he has already made ID cards for 2000 children in Chautauqua County this year. The Masons also visit senior citizens in nursing homes.
“Some older people give up their licenses and have no valid ID, so we do this for them as well,” Kerr said.
The Masons work closely with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and participate in events around the county throughout the year. They will be in Jamestown in Sept. for Bergman Park’s Labor Day activities.
Several dog owners brought their canines to the village for the Sirius Dog School Mutt Minster show.
Jackie Grant of Fredonia showed her 8-year-old golden retriever, Cinnamon, who has completed dog school training and the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen program. Rescued dogs were the highlight of the show, but everyone walked away with a ribbon.
Leeann Cogdill, host of the event and owner of Sirius Dog School said, “I particularly ask for dogs with interesting stories.”
Cogdill teaches canines self control, polite walking and how to pay attention. Owners can benefit by learning techniques for transferring classroom skills to the real world.
