Helen J. Szczerbacki
HANOVER – Helen J. Szczerbacki, age 96, of Dunkirk, N.Y., died Thursday, August 22, 2013 at the TLC/HN-Nursing Facility in Hanover, N.Y., after an extended advancement of Alzheimer’s Disease that had affected her life significantly. The family is grateful to the loving care extended to her by the staff at the nursing facility.
Helen was born in Dunkirk on September 11, 1916, the daughter of the late Joseph and Sophia (Pieczul) Narusiewicz. She was a graduate of Dunkirk High School and the Fredonia Normal School and received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Kent State University. In addition to being a homemaker, she was a longtime kindergarten teacher at St. Mary’s & St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School. Helen was a dedicated member of Blessed Mary Angela R.C. Parish-St. Hedwig’s Church, the Holy Rosary Society of that parish, the Bishop’s Committee, the Dunkirk Senior Citizens, the Dunkirk Historical Society, the Kosciuszko Polish Home and the Women of the Moose.
Surviving are her son, Stephen (Patricia) Szczerbacki of Sheridan, N.Y., her daughter, Ellen Szczerbacki Rodriguez of Kissimee, Fla., her daughter-in-law, Joan (Bialaszewski) Szczerbacki of Sheridan, N.Y., and her sisters, Genevieve “Jenny” Narusiewicz of Dunkirk and Johanna Laughlin of Rock Hill, N,Y. Four grandchildren, one great grandchild, nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Stephen J. Szczerbacki, Sr., who died August 5, 1973, her son, Vitold J. Szczerbacki, who died February 1, 2013, her brother, Dr. Vitold Narusiewicz and her sister, Victoria Mosher.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be held Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at 10 a.m. in Blessed Mary Angela R.C. Parish-St. Hedwig’s Church. Private interment will be in St. Hedwig’s Cemetery. There will be no prior visitation. Flowers gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to either the Alzheimer’s As-sociation or to the St. Hedwig’s Cemetery Association. The Holy Rosary Society will recite the rosary at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church prior to the Mass. Arrangements by the Newman Funeral Home, Inc.
