Devils edged by No. 25 Virginia Wesleyan, 1-0

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Despite a solid effort against a nationally ranked team, Fredonia State’s women’s soccer team fell to 0-2 with a 1-0 loss Sunday to Virginia Wesleyan.

The Marlins, ranked No. 25 in NCAA Division III, scored the only goal of the game midway through the first half.

Starting a lineup of six freshmen, Fredonia State head coach Chris Case was looking for improvement in his team following a 2-0 loss Saturday to Christopher Newport – and he got it.

“We made a big step forward against a really good team,” Case said. “We just couldn’t score.”

The Blue Devils did a better job Sunday controlling the ball and had possession for much of the first half, before Virginia Wesleyan broke through.

“One of their girls played a great ball out (of the defensive end) and they countered on us,” Case said.

The counter led to a corner kick by the Marlins (1-0-1). The Blue Devils had two chances to clear the ball before the Marlins scored.

While the Marlins controlled the ball for a good portion of the second half, the Blue Devils had two good scoring chances in the final 10 minutes.

The first was a shot by Jordyn Ruston from just outside the 18-yard box, which sailed high. With about six minutes remaining, the Blue Devils played the ball to the back post. Alexis Moreland headed the ball on net, and the Virginia Wesleyan goalkeeper made the save.

Hannah McGlinchey was the Fredonia State goalkeeper for the second straight game.

Ruston, Moreland, and McGlinchey are freshmen.
