Fredonia on losing end of thrilling five-set duel
Lea Richir’s 24 digs were not enough as the Jamestown Lady Red Raiders pulled out a thrilling five-set victory over Fredonia on Thursday in West League girls high school volleyball action.
In the end, the scores read 25-22, 26-28, 25-20, 24-26, 25-23.
Fredonia’s Makenzie Tarnowski charted six kills and five blocks while Emily Ludwig and Margaret Wright combined for 14 kills. Maddie Crandall had 20 assists and three aces in a losing effort.
The Lady Red Raiders were led by Becky Rew’s 26 assists and 10 aces while Haley Jones added 10 kills and six blocks for the winners. Kaitlyn Haines added 12 kills and 10 digs and Ally Boskat charted nine kills, as many blocks and eight digs for the victors.
“It was incredible volleyball,” Fredonia coach Chris Anderson said. “It was one of the most entertaining matches I ever coached. We play them at Jamestown later in the year. It will be nice to play them. What we did tonight was very, very impressive.”

BROCTON – Alexis Clark helped lead a rally for the Dunkirk Lady Marauders (1-1, 1-0) as they rallied from two sets down to stun Brocton (0-2, 0-1) in five sets.
Clark finished with six aces, 12 kills and five blocks as Dunkirk prevailed, 25-27, 18-25, 25-23, 25-22, 26-24 in a West League battle.
Jada Neil contributed in the comeback with six aces, 16 assists and four digs while Sarah Hanlon added an ace, 12 kills and three digs.
For the Lady Bulldogs, Maddison Mathews had 14 points, four aces, two kills and as many blocks. Emily LaPorte finished with 13 service points, three aces, one kill and a block in a losing effort.
“It was very disappointing,” Brocton coach Andy Deakin said. “It was an exciting match. We had trouble receiving and were making some critical mistakes. We had some early-season difficulty with serve-receive.”
