Kleine strikes twice in Devils’ 2-1 victory
Fredonia State freshman Kristie Kleine scored two goals in the span of 53 seconds in the first half as the Blue Devils defeated visiting Penn State Behrend, 2-1, in the first day of the Clarion Hotel Classic.
Kleine’s first career goal as a Blue Devil came in the 31st minute. Catie Hale assisted. Mary Bruton assisted on Kleine’s second score.
“It was probably a special night for her,” Fredonia State coach Chris Case said. “It was her first home game at Fredonia State and she gets two goals in the first half. She works hard. She will get those chances if she keeps working hard.”
Behrend cut the deficit in half at the 68th minute when Sam Vasy connected for her fourth goal of the season.
Fredonia State freshman goaltender Hannah McGlinchey was credited with six saves while earning her first collegiate win against two losses.
“She made some good saves and made saves when we needed her to,” Case said. “She made some good saves for us. She is coming along and playing better each and every game.”
Behrend’s Troyan Taylor made four saves.
The Devils improve to 1-2-0. They take on Mount Union at 7 p.m. Saturday night. Mount Union defeated Utica, 1-0, earlier in the day. Behrend and Utica play at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
“I thought we had a really good first half,” Case noted. “I was quite pleased with what we were doing. We created a few chances.”
