Dunkirk sets school record in season-opening win Thursday
The Dunkirk Lady Marauders opened up the 2013 girls high school soccer season with a bang as they set a new school record with 13 goals in a 13-4 beating of Olmsted in the first round of the Dunkirk Kickoff Tournament on Thursday.
Cailin Pogorzelski and Kyle Bentley each netted three goals while Pogorzelski also had two helpers. Emilee Hanlon found the back of the net four times.
Amanda Michalski, Morgan Mirek and Natalie Nytz each added three goals while Michalski had two assists as did Sidney Charles. Nytz and Mirek each had one helper for the victors.
Aimee Kaufmann was the winning goalie with three saves.
“I’m very happy,” Dunkirk coach Phil Cook said. “They did a great job. They moved the ball very well, created scoring chances and they finished them. We have been a very competitive team the last couple years. We have never been able to quite get over that hump into a winning team. To win a season opener is always nice. I think that we have a talented group of girls with a lot of offensive talent.”
In the opening game of the tournament, Lake Shore’s Meloney Lesimer netted two goals to lift Lake Shore to a 3-2 victory over Springville.
Alaina Wlodarek netted two goals in a losing effort.
The conclusion of the tournament is today at Dunkirk High School as Springville plays Olmsted at 4:30 p.m. followed by Lake Shore vs. Dunkirk at 7 p.m.
