Mackinnon nets game-winner as Fredonia blanks Jamestown, 1-0

OLEAN – Emily Mackinnon scored the game-winning goal and Alex Zentz posted a shutout as the Fredonia Lady Hillbillies blanked the Jamestown Lady Red Raiders, 1-0, Saturday in the Consolation game of the Olean Kickoff Tournament in girls high school soccer action.

Mackinnon scored the game-winner off a penalty kick with five minutes left in the game. Despite being a defenseman, Fredonia coach Cathy Cruver elected to have Mackinnon take the penalty kick.

“She has a big leg and a lot of accuracy,” Cruver said.

Zentz made six saves and was aided by a solid defensive effort from the Lady Hillbillies.

“It was a big defensive game,” Cruver said. “We moved people around because we wanted to focus on defense. We have a couple schemes the girls know very well. It worked well for us today. We have to figure out how to get more shots on goal. That’s a thing we need to work out. The girls played very well together. We had a very short preseason this year. With new girls coming up from the modified season, we needed time to jell as a team. The big loss to Olean kind of shook a few heads and we came together as a team today.”

Fredonia returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Dunkirk at 4:30 p.m. There will be a 50-50 drawing and proceeds will go towards raising new uniforms and equipment.
