Myra J. Press

GOWANDA – Myra J. Press, 82, of Gowanda, NY passed away Thursday Sept. 5, 2013 at the Gowanda Nursing Home. She was born March 22,

1931 in Buffalo, NY, the daughter of the late Dr. Curtis and Myra (Fritsch) Johnson. On April 16, 1977 she married William G. Press, who predeceased her in

1991. Mrs. Press could swim before she could walk. She taught swimming lessons for men and women, GPC and JN Adam clients and family swim at the Gowan-

da Central School pool for 33 years. She also worked with Gowanda Recreation in swimming and roller skating for 30 years and in 1994 won an award at the

1st annual sports banquet for her contributions to swimming. In 1948, she did a diving exhibition for Robert L. Ripley of “Ripley’s Believe It Or Not.” She also was a crossing guard for Gowanda for 23 years, was a Police Matron, a Pinkerton Security officer and delivered flowers for Hagar’s for 25 years.

She was an original member of the Kountry Sisters Home Bureau, member of the Three Scorers, Gowanda Happy Travelers, Gowanda Area Historical

Society, Gowanda United Methodist Church, BPW 1999 Woman of the Year, AFS, F.I.S.H, and was a leader, chairman of cookie sales and cooked at camp

for the Girl Scouts. She also was on the Board of Trustees and Membership Committee for CCF Hospitality center and 1999-2000 volunteer of the year. She

loved roses and flower gardens and hairpin lace afghans. She is survived by a son Francis Ross of Gowanda, NY; 5 daughters, Kay (Fred) Dobbertin of Otto,

NY, Nancy (John) Kroog of Stony Point, NY, Liz (Dan) Schnebel of Weirsdale, Fla., Audrey (Steven) Cline of Dayton, NY and Candace Barrett of San Diego, CA;

15 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Dr. Curtis Johnson and a daughter April Musial. A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Mentley Funeral Home Inc., 105 East Main Street in Gowanda, NY.
