Maple Grove 26 19 25 22 11

The Dunkirk Lady Marauders (2-1, 1-0) survived an early deficit to come back and defeat Maple Grove (0-1, 0-0) 3-2 in a CCAA non-league volleyball contest Monday.

Maple Grove jumped out to a 2-1 lead, but it was Dunkirk who won the next two games to earn the victory with scores of 24-26, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22, 25-11.

“We (got behind) against Brocton-Westfield in our last match as well,” Dunkirk coach Kim Delgado said. “It seems like they take some time to get going. But we got the same result last game. Once they get going, they begin moving and talking better. And they don’t seem to get down on themselves when they get behind.”

Kassie Sobczak had eight aces, two kills, one block and one dig for Dunkirk. Sarah Hanlon added nine aces of her own as well as 13 kills and four digs. Jada Neal chipped in one ace, 18 assists and one kill while Natasha Colon contributed one ace, two assists, eight kills and two digs for the winners.

Maple Grove was led by Jazmine Hannold’s four aces and 23 assists. Nicole Hemminger had five kills, two blocks and four aces in the losing effort.

“We played well,” Delgado said. ” Our serves were a little rough. We only served 77 percent, which is low for us. But we are doing well. We are a very young team that is starting to play well together.”

Maple Grove plays in Panama today while Dunkirk makes the trip to Jamestown to take on the Lady Red Raiders.

Cora Utegg’s seven assists and 16 digs lifted the Silver Creek Black Knights (1-0, 3-0) past Fredonia (0-1, 1-3), 26-28, 25-19, 25-21, 25-11, Monday in CCAA non-league girls high school volleyball.

Allison Harford and Brooke Birner contributed in the win with 11 kills each for the winners.

The Lady Hillbillies were led by Emily Ludwig’s seven kills and two aces and Mackenzie Tarnowski had five kills and two aces in defeat.

Fredonia returns to action today when it hosts Falconer.
