Fredonia wins in five; Dunkirk falls to Falconer

The Fredonia Lady Hillbillies (1-2, 2-5) have had several contests go five games this season.

On Thursday, one finally went Fredonia’s way as it held off Southwestern (1-2, 2-4) in every way of the term, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, in West I League girls high school volleyball.

“It was nice to win one in five,” Fredonia coach Chris Anderson said. “We have been struggling with passing and putting it away. We got over that hurdle and put this one away. Southwestern is a good volleyball team. It was hard fought both ways.”

Lea Richir led the victors with 26 digs while Emma Thompson charted 18 digs and three aces. Maddie Crandall had 25 assists in the win. The Lady Hillbillies’ hitters combined for 27 kills.

Southwestern’s Maddy Alexander had 23 assists while Carlie Carlson finished with 12 kills. Kara Schutte charted five aces in defeat.

“We got some serious rallies in the fifth game,” Anderson said. “We were up and let Southwestern go on a run. Our girls came back and fought back for the last three points to finish it off.”

Falconer 25 25 25

Sarah Hanlon’s three aces, three kills, two blocks and nine digs were not enough as the Dunkirk Lady Marauders (1-2, 2-3) were swept by the Falconer Lady Golden Falcons (3-0, 3-1) 25-16, 25-13, 25-17 in West League girls high school volleyball action.

Alexis Clark added nine kills, four blocks and four digs while Jada Neal finished with an ace and 11 assists in a losing effort. Cassie Sobczak had three kills, two blocks and a dig for the Lady Marauders.

The Lady Golden Falcons were led by Alyssa Brooks’ 12 kills and Kalynn Swanson’s nine aces, 10 assists and two kills. Hanna Hollahan contributed in the win with seven aces and four kills.

Dunkirk returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Southwestern.

Brocton 5 15 15

BROCTON – The Jamestown Lady Red Raiders swept the Brocton-Westfield Lady Bulldogs (0-2, 0-4), 25-5, 25-15, 25-15, Thursday in CCAA West I League girls high school volleyball.

Brocton-Westfield was led by Lindsey Harp’s four kills and three blocks while Carson Hauser had nine assists and three digs.

The Lady Red Raiders received 13 assists and two aces from Becky Rew while Ashley Butman had four kills, as many aces and a block. Ally Buskat charted seven aces and six kills in the win.

Brocton-Westfield is back in action Tuesday at Sherman.
