Tour of homes was ‘extraordinary’

By M. JACQUIE LODICO

Dunkirk should be so proud. My husband and I are frequent travelers and seldom has a community shown us the smiles and welcome that we received from members of the Dunkirk Historical Society.

As a first year endeavor producing a Tour of Homes, the result was magic. Beautiful and historic buildings, a show of colorful Chrysanthemums and a group of happy and informative greeters made for a stunning success.

As if the historic homes were not enough, the addition of an art exhibition of extraordinary drawings by an extraordinary native son George W. Eggers, was a surprise bonus.

Kudos to Mary Helen Miskuly and the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo for the wonderful and well mounted display that we found in one of the buildings.

We took the opportunity to visit the Dunkirk Historical Museum to research the family names of Erick, Yerico and Lodico. Volunteer Denise Griggs was most helpful even on the busy tour day.

I hope that this becomes an annual event. We suggest that this beginning could become a tourism tool for the city. The folks in the Buffalo area would gladly visit Dunkirk next year, view the houses, buy a meal and perhaps make it an overnight, if they know about this event.

Many thanks to those who gave my husband and me a wonderful day.
