Lady Billies blank?Lady T’birds in the rain
Rainy conditions may have slowed down the ball, but they didn’t slow Fredonia’s offense during its 6-0 victory over Chautauqua Lake in Saturday’s CCAA West League girls soccer matchup.
“The weather conditions were absolutely terrible,” Fredonia coach Cathy Cruver said. “There wasn’t a whole lot of ability to dribble. Both sides spent most of their time trying to get the ball out of the water.”
Morgan Genovese led the way for the Lady Hillbillies with two goals and an assist in the win.
Krista Wheelock opened the scoring for Fredonia on an unassisted goal off a corner kick.
Fredonia added four more goals in the first half to take a 5-0 lead going into halftime. Aleyna Szot followed Wheelock on an assist by Genovese. Devin Kowalewski scored on an assist by Sarah Cruver. Genovese followed with the first of her two goals.
The fifth goal of the first half was scored by Zoya Katta on an assist from Emily Mackinnon.
Scoring came to a near-halt in the second half as Genovese scored the lone goal, unassisted, to put the Lady Hillbillies on top 6-0.
Fredonia goaltender Alex Zentz needed to make only one save to earn the shutout.
“Chautauqua Lake is a class act,” Cruver said. “My team had more fun (Saturday) than they did all season. Chautauqua Lake had just as much fun. The sportsmanship was phenominal and no one wanted the other team to get hurt (due to the poor field conditions). The referees even said it was a nice game to ref. It was just a fun game in the rain.”
