Dunkirk takes 3rd at East Aurora Invitational
EAST AURORA – Dunkirk took third place in the boys’ 3-mile cross country meet Saturday at the rain-drenched course of the East Aurora Invite.
“We are very happy,”?Dunkirk coach?Kurt Warmbrodt said. “They ran very strong. They seem to be coming along quite nicely. It was truly a team effort. My first three guys were very close and were right where they had to be.”
Dunkirk finished with 100 points, 65 points behind first-place Alden (35) and 17 points behind second-place Southwestern. Fredonia took fourth (107) while Silver Creek finished fifth (118) and Gowanda finished in eighth (229).
“Everyone runs in the same weather,” Fredonia coach Carol Zirkle said. “It was not a beautiful day for running, but it was the same for everyone. I felt they ran the same as if it wasn’t raining.”
Mike Meredith was Fredonia’s top runner coming in fifth place (17:08.07). Teammate Josh Goodhue finished eighth (17:25.24) followed by 19th place finisher Stephen Formanowicz (17:57.83), Jacob Eckman at 28th (18:45.02) and Will Schrantz (20:18.42) in 51st place.
“When you can go there and get a Top 10 finish, we are always happy with that result,” Zirkle said.
Dunkirk’s Javier Soto took ninth place (17:27.51), followed by fellow Marauders Ethan Francis (17:34.02) in 10th, Ray Tarnowski (17:52.58) 16th, Alec Tomaszewski (18:08.73) 22nd and Tom Logan (19:51.61) 47th.
Silver Creek’s best finish came from 12th place Caleb Makuch (17:38.08). Rounding out the top five Black Knight runners were Jake Mullen (17:52.58) 14th, Jakob McDaneld (18:48.15) 30th, James Corbin (19:00.36) 32nd and Ryan Ruia (19:12.61) 36th.
Mark Eichorn (18:05.91) was Gowanda’s top runner coming in 21st place followed by Mark Camenzuli (18:43.68) 27th, Nick Uliana (21:44.89) 61st, Richard Hughes (21:45.35) 62nd and Sasha Witvliet (22:51.30) 69th.
In the girls event, Silver Creek took fifth place (107) and Fredonia finished sixth (127). Immaculata was the top girls team (64) narrowly edging second-place Alden (65). Newfane rounded out the top three with 98 points.
Fredonia was led by fifth-place Gwen Stokes (20:09.92). Michaela Tramuta (20:13.81) followed in sixth place. Maitlan Langworthy (22:59.99) came in 34th, Mary Polvino (23:45.78) 43rd and Kate Fiorella (23:49.37) 45th.
Silver Creek’s top five runners were Emma Seiders (20:21.58) ninth, Hannah Seiders (20:28.98) 10th, Rachel Radack (21:39.81) 19th, Sarah Adams (22:39.93) 30th and Claire Castiglia (23:38.33) 41st.
Lady Panthers take 4th
GENESEE – The Gowanda Lady Panthers finished fourth out of 16 teams at the Genesee Community College high school cross country meet Saturday.
GCC is the site of the Section 5 Sectional championships.
“Everyone from Section 5 was there,” Gowanda coach Pete Palmer noted. “It was some good competition.”
Colleen Steward had a strong eighth-place finish with a time of 21:04 while Sarah Gribbs placed 14th at 21:42. Lexi Latona placed 48th with a time of 23:29 while Kelsey Depriore was 56th at 23:46. Marcella Torres rounded out the top five runners for the Lady Panthers with a time of 24:15 to take 65th place.
