SCHOOLS: Making waves with swimming
It was such as strange match-up, you may have missed some record-setting performances.
Who would have thought Panama school, enrollment 550, would be taking on a combined team from Silver Creek, Fredonia and Dunkirk, combined enrollment 4,600 students, in girls swimming? It happened last Wednesday – and the combined team won despite a strong effort by the much smaller district of swimmers.
Panama is easily forgotten in this portion of the county, but just like Forestville, you have to wonder why it is not actively looking to combine with other districts. If larger schools, such as Silver Creek, Fredonia and Dunkirk, are part of a combined team, you know Panama won’t be one for long.
But back to the achievements. Deidra Osula of Fredonia broke a 29-year-old record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.33 seconds and Riley Drummond of Dunkirk broke her own school record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1 minute and 3.67 seconds.
That is a great start for one team with three schools represented.
