SINCLAIRVILLE – Kyle Ruge scored three goals to help give the Cassadaga Valley Cougars their first win of the season with a 4-0 victory over Cattaraugus-Little Valley on Monday in CCAA Central boys high school soccer.

The Cougars’ Jaroslav Hadecek – a foreign exchange student from the Czech Republic – opened the scoring in the first half off a feed from Ruge, who added two goals of his own in the first half to give the home team a 3-0 halftime edge.

Ruge completed the hat trick in the second half for the 4-0 victory.

Hunter Thorpe was credited with an assist for the winners.

Freshman Dan Anderson was the winning goalie as he made 17 saves in his first career start as a goalie.

“We were able to get more shots on goal than we have all season,” Cassadaga Valley coach Josh Schauman said. “We changed our lineup to give us more speed.”

Chautauqua Lake 1, Fredonia 1 Overtime

Neither team was able to manage a goal during the overtime period, which resulted in a draw between Chautauqua Lake and Fredonia in Monday’s CCAA West boys soccer contest.

Fredonia got on the board first at the 30:32 minute mark as Bryce Gifford scored the opening goal off of an assist by Matthew Civillette.

One minute later, Chautauqua Lake drew even on a penalty kick by Zach Weatherlow.

Fredonia was unable to come away with a victory despite holding a commanding 29-4 advantage in shots on goal. They also led the corner kick advantage 15-1.

James Latimer made 21 saves for Chautauqua Lake, most of which were right to his chest. Fredonia just could not find a way to challenge the Thunderbird goaltender.

“Our shape and system are coming along,” Fredonia coach Brett Gould said. “We are making progress every game. I am really proud of our kids. The effort (Monday) was fantastic. You don’t climb stairs four at a time. Our progress in the last week has been phenomenal. One foot either way and we are up by five or six goals by the half.”

Fredonia’s Morghan Thompson made four saves in the draw.

Westfield-Brocton 4, Dunkirk 0

Bryce Bentham’s hat trick powered the Westfield-Brocton Wolverine (1-1, 3-1) offense to a 4-0 shutout over the Dunkirk Marauders (0-4, 0-5-1) in Monday’s CCAA West League boys soccer matchup.

Chris Cockram assisted on Bentham’s first goal while Nathan Oaks and Dylan Robinson assisted on his second and third goals, respectively.

The fourth and final goal was scored by Christian Fuentes as Robinson picked up his second assist of the game.

Ty Bentham recorded six saves in the shutout victory.
