Fredonia Memorial Legion Auxiliary

The Auxiliary of Fredonia Memorial American Legion met recently in the Post clubrooms. Chaplain Kathy Guest announced that donations to the Barker Library and Museum will be made for recently deceased members.

Membership Chairman Donna Keith is collecting 2013-2014 dues. Dues may be dropped off or mailed to the clubroom at 156 East Main St. in Fredonia. She announced that Unit #59 achieved 100 percent of membership for 2012-2013 and were recognized with a membership ribbon at the recent Department of New York Convention held in Niagara Falls.

The Unit finalized plans for its chicken and rib barbecue to be held on Saturday, Oct. 5 from noon until 5 p.m. The cost is $10. Presale tickets may be purchased from members at the clubrooms or by contacting Chairman Janis Bouquin at 672-5002.

All proceeds will benefit the Americanism and Children and Youth programs. Any members who wished to help on the day of the barbecue are also asked to call.

The Unit will also be collecting items to send to troops stationed overseas. Food items include individual serving sizes of cereal, soup mixes, drinks, meals, nuts, granola bars, dried fruit, crackers, foil pouch tuna or chicken, beef jerky and peanut butter. Other items include travel size personal care items, and crossword puzzles, wordsearch, playing cards, small games and current paperbacks. Donations can be dropped off at the clubrooms, and are welcomed to be dropped off the day of the chicken barbecue.

Delegates to the Dept. Convention in Niagara Falls reported on programs for the coming year. Unit #59 Member and current President Wendy Privitera was elected 8th District President at the Convention. Four members will be attending the 8th District Conference in Wellsville. The newly elected department officers speak at the event.

The next meeting of the auxiliary will be held Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m. All members are urged to attend.

Chautauqua County Council Veterans of Foreign Wars

The Chautauqua County Council Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary recently held an ice cream social at the Chautauqua County Home for the residents.

Edward Fik, VFW commander and Joanne Warlikowski, Ladies Auxiliary president, along with members from the council greeted the residents and served ice cream sundaes to them.

Greeting cards were also handed out.

Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary

The Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 10. It was the first meeting of the year, with President Gayle Cieplinski presiding. The meeting was opened with a prayer by Chaplain Paula Pattison,

Then members present recited the Pledge of Allegiance, the Auxiliary Preamble and had a moment of silence for our fallen soldiers.

Secretary Carol Baker, read the minutes of the last meeting and Treasurer Karen Field read the treasurer’s report. Both were accepted as read. Correspondence was read by Secretary Carol Baker.

Chaplain Pattison reported the Unit had one long standing member pass away, Alice Barmore of Gerry. She will be missed by many.

Children & Youth Chairperson Cieplinski noted that the children’s Halloween party will be held on Sunday, Oct. 27 from 1-3 p.m. She and her committee have many crafts and games planned, along with a costume parade with prizes. It was also noted that the children’s Christmas party is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 22.

Community Service/Cancer Chairperson Sally Lawson reported that she will be walking in the “Making Strides for Breast Cancer” walk on Oct. 20.

Education was reported on by Lawson. The ‘Backpacks for Kids’ is going very well with many donations for local children.

Field Service chairperson Shirley Coon has spent many hours visiting with a 94-year-old local Army veteran.

Membership was reported by Lawson. The 2014 membership cards are ready. Unit members are encouraged to pay their dues early, and can mail their $20 dues to Lawson, or pay them at the Post.

Junior Auxiliary chairperson Pat Hayward and Charyle Tyler are sending out notices to all Unit 1280 eligible Juniors to get the Jr. Unit active again. They hope to hold meetings the second Sunday of each month; they have many activities planned.

For new business many things were noted: Wednesday, Sept. 18 will be the Squadron 1280″s last ‘Cruise-In’ for 2013. Unit members will be making and selling pies and desserts to benefit Homeless Veterans and raffling off a gas-card. On Oct. 19, for Make a Difference Day, Unit 1280 members along with the local Scout Troops will be collecting food donations for the local Cassadaga Food Pantry.

Field reminded members that the annual Vendor’s Showcase is set for Saturday, Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Post. Twenty local vendor’s have signed up to sell their best wares, along with a Unit 1280 bake sale. It is a great time to start Christmas shopping. Everyone is welcome; food will be available for purchase. Discussion was also held on having a hunter’s breakfast opening day, Nov. 16; and a Deck the Halls party on Dec. 1; both tabled until the October meeting.

Members present voted to donate money to Making Strides for Breast Cancer.

With no further business at hand, Pattison gave a closing prayer, and Cieplinski thanked everyone for coming, and adjourned the meeting at 8:20 p.m.

Unit 1280 continues to collect coupons for overseas families; Labels for Education; Pennies for Hospice; can tabs and canceled postage stamps. Unit 1280 also sells nice corn brooms for $8; anyone interested may call the Post at 595-3145.

Flag Retirement Ceremony

A flag retirement ceremony will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m., at the Fireman’s Training Grounds on Brigham Road in Dunkirk. This ceremony will show audiences the proper, respectful way to retire and dispose of American flags.

Amvet Riders 409

Interested Amvet riders can meet at the intersection of Routes 20 and 60 in Fredonia at 2 p.m. on Saturday. They will leave for the Dunkirk Conference Center to support Music on the Shores, an all-day event to support the “Send a Kid to Camp program.” The group plans to give the children a chance to check out some cool bikes.

The group will also hold the Appreciation & Autumn Run on Oct. 12. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. at Post 409, Legion Drive, Gowanda. Kickstands go up at 11:30 a.m., and riders are scheduled to return to the post at 5 p.m. for dinner and live music by Hooman. Dinner and music are included for those who participate in the run; $5 for those who join for dinner and music only. The Amvets Riders is asking for donations for the families of those they have lost in the past year.
