Hillbillies move up to No. 10 in latest NYSSWA poll

Fredonia (3-0) moved up a spot to No. 10 in the New York State Sports Writers Association Class C football poll this week after another impressive performance in its 35-22 win over Salamanca while Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake (3-0) remained at No. 3 in Class D.

Elsewhere, in Class AA, Section 5’s Aquinas (3-0) remained atop the rankings and were followed by Christian Brothers Academy of Syracuse (3-0, Sec. 3), Erasmus (3-0, Public School Athletic League), Sachem North (2-0, Sec. 11) and Canisius (2-1, Monsgr. Martin Association).

Other Western New York teams in the Class AA polls were St. Joseph’s (3-0, MMA) and Frontier (3-0). Lancaster (3-0), Lockport (2-1) and Orchard Park (2-1) were listed as honorable mention.

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (3-0, Sec. 2) remained atop the Class A poll and were followed by Lawrence (2-0, Sec. 8), Eastridge (3-0, Sec. 5), Sweet Home (3-0, Sec. 6) and Poly Prep (3-0, AIS).

Along with Sweet Home, West Seneca East (3-0, No. 13), Grand Island (3-0, No. 16), St. Mary’s of Lancaster (3-0, MMA, No. 19) and Williamsville South (3-0, No. 21) represented Western New York while McKinley (3-0), South Park (2-1) and Kenmore East (3-0) made the honorable mention list.

In Class B, Section 4’s Maine-Endwell kept its spot atop the poll while Marlboro (3-0, Sec. 9) was No. 2, Alden (3-0) was No. 3, Cazenovia (3-0, Sec. 3) was No. 4 and Schalmont (3-0, Sec. 2) was No. 5.

Alden’s opponent tonight, Depew (3-0) came in at No. 10 and were joined by fellow Section 6 schools Burgard (3-0, No. 12) and Cheektowaga (2-1, No. 14). Pioneer (2-1) was the lone honorable mention.

Hoosick Falls (3-0, Sec. 2) remained in the top spot in Class C and were followed Babylon (2-0, Sec. 11), Le Roy (3-0, Sec. 5), Chenango Forks (2-1, Sec. 4) and Potsdam (3-0, Sec. 10). Woodlands (2-1), No. 4 in last week’s poll, dropped to No. 17 after its 7-6 loss to then No. 17 Bronxville (3-0, Sec. 1). The Lions moved up to No. 13 after the win.

Cleveland Hill (3-0, No. 6) and Lackawanna (3-0, No. 11) were the other Section 6 representatives in the poll while Salamanca (2-1), Southwestern (2-1) and Tonawanda (2-1) were listed as honorable mention.

Reigning New York State Public High School Association Class D champion Randolph (3-0) was No. 1 for the second-straight week and were followed by Tioga (3-0, Sec. 4), Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake, Sandy Creek (3-0, Sec. 3) and Chester (2-1, Sec. 9).
