Hippology expert advances to national competition

Not many people know what hippology is but Mayville resident Ashley Crandall does. She will be competing in the National Hippology Contest in Louisville, Ky. this November. A second place finish in the competition at the New York State Fair gave her the right to move on.

Hippology is the study of horses. Ashley is a member of the Chautauqua County Junior Trail Riders 4-H club. Participants in the horse program learn about horse anatomy, care, nutrition and equipment. Youth study a variety of sources, participate in hands-on activities and practice diligently for the competion.

Ashley has been an active 4-H member for seven years. In addition to the horse program, she has participated in community service, public speaking, horticulture, food, creative crafts, recycling, home environments, wood working and veterinary science programs.

A portion of the expenses of Ashley’s trip to Louisville will be covered through the generous contributions of the Zonta Club of Jamestown, which helps young women advance their lives.
