Blessing of the Pets

Trinity Episcopal Church, on 11 Day Street, next to the Post Office in Fredonia, will host a Service of Blessing of the Pets in commemoration of St. Francis Sunday at 4 p.m. The community is welcome to bring their pets to the front lawn of the church where the blessing will be held. If the weather is inclement, go to the rear of the church to Garland Hall.

In his Canticle of the Sun, Francis wrote, “… Let creatures all give thank to Thee and serve in great humility.”

Dinner fundraiser Saturday at VFW

The Chautauqua County Council Of The Veterans of Foreign Wars Sr. Vice Commander Tom Rabb and Sr. Vice President Robin Richmond will host a dinner fundraiser at the Pine Valley Post 2522 in Cherry Creek on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. The evening’s menu includes meatloaf, salad, mashed potatoes, vegetables, bread and dessert. The cost is $8. A basket raffle and money raffle will also be held.

This fundraiser is to help with VFW programs in the 2014-2015 season. The public is welcome and take-out is available. For further information call 341-1328 and leave a message.

DFD run report

The Dunkirk Fire Depart-ment reports going on 160 runs in August, with 122 of those EMS runs which resulted in 40 transports to Brooks Memorial Hospital. There were 25 still alarms, nine box alarms and four mutual aid calls the DFD answered, according to Chief Keith Ahlstrom.

Basic STAR registration at Silver Creek School Thursday evening

The NYS Tax Department will register homeowners receiving the Basic STAR exemption at the Silver Creek Central School Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

The STAR Registration program impacts 25,648 Basic STAR recipients in Chautauqua County and 2.6 million homeowners statewide. Senior citizens receiving the Enhanced STAR exemption are not impacted.

The registration facilitates Governor Cuomo’s initiative to protect New Yorkers from fraud and waste in the STAR Program. The average homeowner saves $700 as a result of the Basic STAR exemption, which is available on the primary residence of homeowners with incomes under $500,000.

The registration deadline is Dec. 31 in order to continue receiving the exemption in 2014 and thereafter.

Concert tickets still available

Tickets are still available for a concert being given by Serendipity at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 410 N. Main St., Jamestown, to benefit Prendergast Library.

The local women’s a capella group will present music in a variety of styles. Members are Melanie Gritters, Gail Grundstrom, Leslie Hallock, Laura Hotchkiss, Sue Huther, Cyndi Lorenc, Lissa VanDewark and Carolyn Whitehead.

Tickets for $15 may be purchased at the church, at the library at 509 Cherry St., or at the door the evening of the concert.

Steak fry to benefit Relay for Life Saturday

The Kosciuszko Club/-Paper Factory Relay for Life Team will hold a fundraising steak fry at the Kosciuszko Club, 225 Nevins St., Dunkirk on Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Dinner includes strip steak, salad bar, baked potato, dessert, water, coffee, iced tea and lemonade. Tickets are $15 each or two for $25 and can be purchased at the Kosciuszko Club, the Dunkirk Lighthouse or by calling 366-1044 or 680-0168.

Forestville American Legion to host Steak, Ham and Turkey Raffle Saturday

The Forestville American Legion will host their annual Steak, Ham and Turkey Raffle on Saturday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the J. Carter Knapp Post 953 at 6 Cedar St.

The event will include a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and ticket drawings for $100, $50 and $25 prizes. Food and beverages will be provided. Everyone is welcome.
