College Council welcomes new members, says farewell to two

The SUNY Fredonia College Council said goodbye to two former college council members and welcomed two new members at its most recent meeting.

Carla Westerlund and Robert L. Heichberger were both commended for their years of involvement with the university, its council and its community.

Westerlund, a former educator at Jamestown Public Schools, was a member of the council from 1999 until this year.

Heichberger was a member of the council for 14 years and was a member of the Presidential Search Committee from 2011 to 2012. He also served as executive assistant to the college’s president, was the dean for teacher education and assistant dean for professional studies.

Frank Pagano, chair of the council, said of Heichberger, “The Fredonia College Council expresses its great admiration and gratitude to Dr. Robert L. Heichberger and adds its best wishes and thanks for his many years of generous service to SUNY Fredonia.”

The council then congratulated recently appointed council members Joseph C. Johnson and Stephen W. Keefe.

Johnson is the former director of finance for the city of Jamestown and was the business manager for the Board of Public Utilities in Jamestown as well.

Fredonia Mayor Keefe was a former English teacher and an administrator at E2CC Board of Cooperative Services. He was the principal of Brocton Central School from 2000-2010. He and many of his family members are graduates of SUNY Fredonia.

Along with a shift in council members, the council acknowledged the addition of 18 new, full-time faculty members.

“That’s a significant number and I am so impressed with the credentials of the faculty,” said Teresa Brown, provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Brown finished, “This is a sign of ongoing commitment to maintaining quality and standards of academics.”
