Gowanda downs Falconer in thrilling fashion, 39-38

FALCONER – With 53 seconds remaining in the game, and trailing 38-32, the Gowanda Panthers’ Lucas Brawdy found Jordan Young on a 40-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 38-all before Brawdy put the game away with the extra point kick during Friday’s Class C South high school football game.

In the first five minutes of the contest, there were five touchdowns scored between the two teams. Falconer got on the board first after Cody Dustin scored on a 20-yard run. Gowanda’s Brennan Geiger answered with a 45-yard touchdown run. Brawdy’s extra point kick gave Gowanda a 7-6 lead.

Falconer scored seconds later on a 78-yard kickoff return by Jacob Youngberg.

Brawdy found Lucas McKeever with a 59-yard pass on Gowanda’s next drive, but once again, Falconer scored shortly after on a 63-yard run by Dustin to cap the frantic first five minutes of the game.

In the second quarter, it was Falconer who again drew first blood as Da Shawn Jackson ran for a 45-yard touchdown. Gowanda answered right back with two scores of its own. Geiger scored his second touchdown run, this time from five yards out. Then Chase Williams caught a 25-yard pass from Brawdy to give Gowanda a 26-24 lead going into halftime.

Gowanda was able to extend its lead to 32-24 after Devon Clark recovered a Falconer fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. The lead was short-lived as Falconer was able to tie the game on a 15-yard run by Ryan Dustin followed by the game-tying two-point conversion run by Youngberg.

With the score knotted at 32-32 in the fourth quarter, Dustin again broke a long run, this time for a 76-yard touchdown. Falconer’s two-point conversion attempt failed leaving the score at 38-32 and the door open for Gowanda.

As the clock dwindled to less than a minute left, Gowanda was able to tie the game as Brawdy threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Young. With 53 seconds left on the clock, Brawdy kicked the extra point through the uprights to give Gowanda the lead and eventually the win.

Falconer turned the ball over on downs on the following drive before the Panthers took a knee to run the clock out.

Brawdy finished the game 6 of 11 for 151 yards and three touchdowns. Geiger racked up 243 yards on 38 carries and two touchdowns.

Falconer’s offense was led by Cody Dustin who carried the ball 19 times for 270 yards and two touchdowns. Ryan Dustin finished the game 0 for 3 passing.
