John R. Behm
WESTFIELD – John R. Behm, age 69, of the Westfield-Sherman Road, Westfield died unexpectedly Thursday, afternoon, October 3, 2013 at home.
John was born on May 12, 1944 in Lockport, NY a son of the late Walter H. and Mildred V. (Simons) Behm and Isabelle Behm currently of Lockport, NY.
John attended school in Ripley, NY and graduated from High School in Bradenton, Florida. He entered the US Navy during the Vietnam War and served honorably as an Aviation Structural Mechanic. John learned his craft as a Master Welder during his time in the Navy.
John had been employed as a welder for Litton Industries in Erie, PA, building Great Lakes Freighters, Ajax Flexible Couplings in Westfield, Electric Materials in North East, PA and retired from Side Hill Copper in Erie, PA. John enjoyed welding and fixing almost anything. He was well known in the area for assisting local farmers with Welding and equipment repairs. John’s neighbor, Heinz Wolf, was his best friend, and John often would help Heinz with many projects around his farm. He refurbished old wood stoves and even custom built a few wood stoves for his friends.
John was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, 118, the John W. Rogers Post 327 American Legion and the William P. Jackway VFW Post 6764 all of West-field. He enjoyed reading and hunting.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce (Irvin) Behm, his daughter Barbara Vananskie of Shamokin, PA, his grandsons, Christopher and Jonathan, his sons, Michael Schell of Westfield and Mark Schell of Randolph, NY and his daughter Terri Samonia of Niagara Falls, NY. John is further survived by his step-children Brian (Cheryl) Brumett of North East, PA, Barry (Melissa) Brumett and Kevin Brumett both of Wattsburg, PA, and by his brother, Carl E. Behm of Westfield, NY and by his step-mother Isabelle Behm of Lockport, NY. Many step-grandchildren and great grandchildren also survive. John was preceded in death by his daughter, Jennifer Behm.
John’s family will be present to receive friends at the Westfield Moose Lodge, Clinton St., Westfield on Saturday, October 12, 2013 from 1 p.m. until the time of services there at 3 p.m. conducted by Rev. Joseph Irvin, John’s brother in law. Memorials may be made to Westfield Memorial Hospital.
