Anderson-Lee Library to host travel authors

On Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m., the Anderson-Lee Library will host Fredonia author, Judy Shuler, and Colorado author, Hildegard Ratliff who will discuss their recently published travel memoir, “Red & Blue: A Memoir of Two Alaskan Tour Guides.”

Not told from the usual perspective of a traveler, the story recounts the rich experiences of tour guides who worked and resided in the Juneau, Alaska, region for many years.

A much more intimate account of the region’s destinations is provided, and lesser-known Alaskan travel destinations are described as well.

The book is more than a traveler’s guide; the authors describe it as “the story of nature and human nature. While tourists were watching nature, their tour guides were watching them, what they said before and during their travels and after they returned home, what attracted their attention. While this book is firmly rooted in a wild and beautiful place, it also digresses into broader themes of human relationships, why we travel, our ties with the natural world, [and] what wild salmon teach us about the meaning of life.”

The talk will cover the following topics: how the authors came to live in Alaska and how they started their tour businesses; how they wrote their book; a short reading from a chapter; a travelogue of their hometown of Juneau; advice for Alaskan travelers. A question and answer session will follow.

Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase at the presentation.
