Gowanda school receives clean audit

GOWANDA – Everything is clean for the Gowanda Board of Education. Buffamante, Whipple, Buttafaro, PC gave a presentation on the external audit.

Wayne Rishell from BWB presented the audit at a recent board meeting. Rishell said the audit has three reports. The first report is on the financial statements which are in accordance.

“We gave you a clean unqualified opinion. That’s the highest ranking,” Rishell said.

For the internal control and compliance section, Rishell said there was one issue with preparing a year-end financial report compliance issue. According to Rishell, the issue was with the year-end reporting and not a day-to-day reporting. The district was informed how to correct the report so it is in compliance with New York state. The third and final report was for internal controls, Rishell said.

The auditing team worked on Title VII documentation and everything was in compliance except for one form of documentation required by students. Three out of 25 students were lacking documentation of a parent or grandparent belonging to a tribe. The district did not lose any funding over the documentation, and corrective action has been taken.

“We don’t want to belittle it but don’t want to raise severe alarms,” Rishell said in regard to the issue.

Rishell also gave information on the general fund, including the district’s equity and assets. Rishell said the district’s audit was “extremely positive” and the district is stable as the district can be.
