Morgan Genovese had a pair of goals and an assist Wednesday as Fredonia (11-5-0, 10-4-0) defeated CCAA West girls soccer foe Frewsburg (10-4-0), 4-2.
Genovese got the Lady Hillbillies on the board first with a feed from Zoya Katta in the 28th minute, before Frewsburg was able to tie the score and send the game to halftime tied 1-1.
The Bears took a 2-1 lead six minutes into the second half as Janessa Annis scored on a penalty kick after the Lady Hillbillies were called for a handball inside the goalie box.
“I think once Frewsburg scored a couple of goals, and after going up in the second half early on the penalty kick, that really shook us up,” Fredonia head coach Cathy Cruver said. “Frewsburg beat (Falconer) the only undefeated team in our league, so we knew we needed to step up. And they did, which was good.”
Genovese tied the game 2-all 16 minutes into the second half on an assist from Devin Kowalewski, before Katta put the Lady Hillbillies up for good on a helper from Genovese with 18 minutes left in regulation. Tiona Pittman provided some assurance for Fredonia on an assist from Aleyna Szot with six minutes left.
“Frewsburg has a couple of very strong players across midfield,” Cruver said. “And we were able to match that (Wednesday) and our defense did a great job keeping them in check, and our midfielders too.”
