Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary holds monthly meeting

The Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary met Tuesday Oct. 8 for their regular monthly meeting, with President Gayle Cieplinski presiding.

In the absence of Chaplain Paula Pattison, the meeting was opened with a prayer by acting Chaplain Pat Hayward. The members present recited the Pledge of Allegiance, the Auxiliary Preamble and had a moment of silence for our fallen soldiers. Treasurer Karen Field read the treasurer’s report; the minutes of the last meeting were tabled until the November meeting.

Correspondence was read by Secretary Carol Baker. Committee reports were given as follows:

The Chaplain reported she sent out three get well cards, and ill members had been visited.

Children & Youth: Chairperson Gayle Cieplinski reported that preparations for the children’s Halloween party were progressing well with pumpkin donations for painting, gift certificates from local businesses and decorations for a scary good time. The party is set for Sunday Oct. 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Post 1280.

Junior Auxiliary: Chairperson Pat Hayward reported that eight girls and one guest attended the first meeting. The next meeting is Sunday Oct. 20, 1 to 3 p.m. which will include the election and installation of their officers.

Membership reported the 2014 membership cards are ready. Unit members are encouraged to pay their dues early and can mail their $20 dues to Sally Lawson or pay them at the Post.

Poppy: Chairperson Carol Baker made a request to order poppies and can labels for the 2014 “Poppy Days”. Carol read her poppy sheet to remind everyone that the poppies are handmade by Veterans and all poppy money collected goes to support veterans and active duty military.

Karen Field reminded members that the annual Vendor’s Showcase is set for Saturday Oct 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Post.

Twenty local vendors have signed up to sell their best wares, and a Unit 1280 bake sale will be held.

It is a great time to start Christmas shopping. Everyone is welcome; food will be available for purchase.

Saturday Oct 26 starting at 9 a.m. Unit 1280 will be joining the local scouts for the annual ‘Make a Difference Day” food collection to benefit the Cassadaga Food Pantry.

It was noted that the bake sale and gas card raffle went well at Squadron 1280’s last ‘Cruise-In’ of 2013.

Unit 1280 attended the County Auxiliary meeting at Unit 327, Westfield. Susan Rawley spoke for the ‘Blue Star Mothers.

Unit 1280 members provided snacks for the CVCS Meet and Greet at Post 1280. The Buffalo VA needs volunteers to help with their Nov. 17 Thanksgiving dinner.

The group discussed having a Hunter’s Breakfast on opening day, Nov. 16 and a Deck the Halls party on Dec.1. Both items were tabled until the November meeting.

Members present voted to donate money to the Jeff Wickmark benefit, the VA and R Walkathon and Gift Shop.

Hayward gave a closing prayer, and Cieplinski adjourned the meeting.

Unit 1280 continues to collect coupons for military families overseas; “Labels for Education”; “Pennies for Hospice”; can tabs and canceled postage stamps. Unit 1280 also sells nice corn brooms for $8; anyone interested may call the Post at 595-3145.
