Town of Dunkirk still working on budget
On Tuesday, Dunkirk Town Supervisor Richard Purol said, “We did it last year, and we’re doing it again this year,” in regard to overriding the property tax cap for the town.
It was announced in August that all county and town governments across New York state will face a 1.66 percent cap on increasing tax levies for the 2014 fiscal year, instead of “2 percent” which has been a commonly used phrase during budget time since 2010.
“If we have a problem for any reason with our figures, we won’t be punished for it,” Purol said. The tax levy and rates were not released.
The town’s regular meeting was held shortly after at 7 p.m. when Highway Superintendent Richard Butts said he and his department “are prepared for winter, if it comes.”
Moving forward, Purol said in his report that he had attended the Chadwick Bay Regional Development Corporation meeting (for which he is vice chairman) to discuss the proposed north county water district on Oct. 10 at Dunkirk City Hall.
At the Town of Dunkirk board meeting, Purol said, “We’re still discussing our options. We’re working on it. It’s a work in progress.”
In other matters, Purol said, “I feel we should seriously consider a moratorium for any building in the C1 area.”
The town discussed their options for amending zoning laws, which can be “a long-term effort on the part of the town board,” according to town Attorney Jeffrey Passafaro.
The board set a date to hold a workshop in November to discuss the zoning area and what kinds of structures will be built there in the future, whether residential or commercial.
The board rescheduled its November meeting for Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. Three public hearings will take place from 6:15 p.m. to 6:45 regarding fire contracts of west town and east town. The third hearing will regard the town’s preliminary budget, which must be submitted to the state by Nov. 20.
