Genovese nets 4 as Billies move on

Morgan Genovese scored four goals Wednesday as No. 8 Fredonia (12-5) cruised past No. 9 Alden (9-6), 6-1, in a Section 6 Class B-1 girls soccer quarterfinal matchup played on Fredonia State’s University Stadium’s grass field.

Genovese scored two goals in each half, three of which were assisted by Devin Kowalewski.

“I was extremely pleased,” Fredonia head coach Cathy Cruver said. “Our passing game was phenomenal. The connection between Devin and Morgan was outstanding. They were absolutely in sync.”

Genovese scored unassisted 12 minutes into the contest to give the Lady Hillbillies a 1-0 lead, before Tiona Pittman scored five minutes later on an assist from Emily MacKinnon. Genovese’s second goal came with six minutes left in the first half on Kowalewski’s first helper.

Up 3-0, Zoya Katta put Fredonia up 4-0 on an assist from Genovese, before Genovese notched the hat trick on a feed from Kowalewski.

Alden got on the board as Bre Borynski found the back of the net, but Genovese had the final say as she scored her fourth goal, the third one on the afternoon assisted by Kowalewski.

Fredonia advances to the Class B-1 semifinals, which will be played at No. 1 City Honors, or at home against No. 16 Medina.
