LERHSNY reminds patients to schedule mammograms in October

Think pink! Officials at facilities of Lake Erie Regional Health System of New York are recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month with special events and giveaways.

“The purpose of our drive to remind women in the community to schedule their mammograms is to raise awareness of the importance of good health habits,” explained Cathleen Bystrak, CRA, BS, RT, MR, CT, Director of Radiology, Lake Shore Health Care Center in Irving.

Both Bystrak and Sharon Muntz, MS, RT, RDMS, Radiology Manager at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk, are encouraging patients to call for mammogram appointments and both say appointments are still available throughout the month at each facility. Brooks Memorial Hospital can be reached for scheduling at 363-3933, and, for Lake Shore Health Care Center, call 951-7277.

For mammogram patients, special gift items are being given during October for mammogram patients, along with chances to win raffle prizes which will be awarded in early November at each location. Employees throughout each facility will be recognizing the importance of Breast Cancer Awareness during the month by wearing pink ribbons which are were distributed by hospital staff and volunteers. Throughout the month, specially created pink treats were also created in the hospital cafeterias with the proceeds donated to breast cancer patients.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer and is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. Officials report breast cancer death rates have been on the decline, likely due to finding cancer earlier in patients and better treatment. Currently, there are more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.
