Brocton Sorority meets
Members of the Brocton Preceptor Beta Epsilon Sorority met Sept. 24 at the home of Marie Zambotti with Gina Hesslink serving as co-hostess. Members voted to send a donation to a Portland family going through a particularly difficult time.
President Janice Hipwell announced that Sunday, March 16 has been reserved at the Brocton American Legion for the group’s annual Towel Bingo party.
Terry Mosher of the Lake Erie Bird Club discussed the many birds that dwell in our area, as well as the many species that pass through at different times of the year. He shared the best bird-watching locations, and told members about wonderful books on birding for those interested in learning more. He told members what kind of seed to put in their feeders to attract different birds.
Mosher also spoke to the group about the College Lodge, and said that it is an amazing place to go to and view birds and wildflowers in the spring. This was followed by an open discussion, with members sharing their own birding experiences and which birds they see in their neighborhoods. They asked Mosher about some birds they see that they cannot identify. The social committee has decided to set up a tour of the College Lodge grounds in the spring, so that members can see the property and its flora and fauna for themselves.
The sorority met Tuesday evening, Oct. 15 at the home of Lois Smith, who served as hostess and co-hostess, serving refreshments. Valerie Lis explained a new degree for Beta Sigma Phi, the first in 22 years. This is the “Torch Bearer” degree and it is the seventh and final degree one can attain. A program on Oreo cookies was presented by Smith, with members learning all sorts of interesting facts, including how Oreos first came onto the market in 1912.
Members toured the Centaur Stride Riding Academy in Westfield recently. They visited Crossroads market afterward and enjoyed lunch there.
The next meeting will be held at the home of Roxanne Fisk on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. Margie Boltz will serve as co-hostess and Fisk will present the program.
