Twenty years ago – 1993

Student of the Week is Rachael Schrader, a senior at Brocton Central School. The daughter of Howard and Kathy Schrader of Portland and George and Patricia Cook of Westfield, she is active in a variety of school organizations, holding offices in Honor Society and Key Club, editor of the yearbook and feature editor of the school newspaper. As an athlete, Rachael is a four-year participant in volleyball and basketball. After a visit to Germany immediately following graduation, she plans to enroll in college.

Thirty years ago – 1983

A two-mile stretch of the Cattaraugus Creek in Gowanda was the site of the second annual Gowanda Fishing Derby, held over the weekend, with 351 contestants participating. The creek was stocked with 206 tagged trout purchased from a private hatchery. Forty-six trout were caught and returned for prizes. Biagio Gall of Gowanda caught the trout tagged by Gabel Bros. Inc. to win a portable television set. Another trout that was tagged as the “Jewel of the Cattaraugus” was caught. But the prize of a $500 diamond ring went unclaimed because the catch was snagged, which is illegal. Only salmon are allowed to be snagged.

Forty years ago – 1973

Carol E. Kommer, a 1972 graduate of Dunkirk High School, is home after completion of a U.S. Navy training program in Orlando, Fla. Miss Kommer is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Kommer, 605 Roosevelt Ave., Dunkirk.

Fifty years ago – 1963

Newly elected officers of the Dunkirk High School Science Club are Michael Woods, president; Frank Bialaszewski, vice president; Linda Roman, secretary; and Michael Krebs, treasurer.
