Silver Creek man shops for a jail cell

  • NORTH COLLINS – A 22-year-old Silver Creek man was sent to the Erie County Holding Center on Thursday on $1,000 bail after he allegedly stole a bank card from a family member and went on a shopping spree.

According to the New York State Police at Collins, Douglas Bastedo Jr. of Porter Avenue reportedly used the card six different times to make ATM withdrawals totaling $600. He also apparently made two purchases inside stores by using the card and signing the family member’s name.

After an investigation following a complaint by the family member, Bastedo was charged with first-degree forgery, fourth-degree grand larceny and identity theft. He was processed at the Collins Barracks and arraigned in Collins Town Court.

FRENCH CREEK – Leisa Braswell, 33, of Clymer was charged with driving while intoxicated, moving from lane unsafely and no seatbelt on Friday. At 7:15 p.m., deputies responded to a one-vehicle accident on French Creek-Mina Road. The operator of the vehicle was identified as Braswell and an investigation found her to allegedly be intoxicated. She was issued uniform traffic tickets.

MAYVILLE – James Mawhir, 24, of Mayville was charged on Oct. 21 with petit larceny. It is alleged that around 8:20 p.m., Mawhir entered a store on North Erie Street, took an item from the store and left without paying. He was located on Sunday and issued an appearance ticket.
